Calibre Bossnut – Game Changer

Now and then a new bike will appear and everyone will stop and wonder how it was done. The Calibre Bossnut is one of those bikes. It was a real game Changer when it came to a decent specification full suspension mountain bike as the price bracket is very low.

The Calibre Cycle Brand from Go Outdoors

When we think of Go Outdoors, we think of a large discount Outdoor and sporting good’s company. That is exactly what they are. Of course the benefit to the consumer is buying power and the ability to produce on a greater scale, therefore lowering the price to us the end user.

The 2020 Bossnut

This years new model of the Award Winning Calibre Bossnut has decided to step the game up and bring you a much improved specification and package of goodies. At Round £1100 (With the discount card) the Bossnut is amazing value and it is a good enough full suspension bike to take to the trails. This years model has undergone a complete re-design including new frame tubing, new geometry and an upgraded spec package.

New Calibre Bossnut

The first versions of the Bossnut were considered to be the best entry level full suspension mountain bike on the market and I must say that it takes a lot to beat this package at this price. The new version has taken it a step further with a lower stand over, longer reach, slacker geometry and a full SRAM SX 12 Speed groupset.

Spec that POPS

The spec list of this machine really does pop out at you. If we start looking at the components it does not take long to start scratching our heads as to how Calibre put this package together for this price. I will point out some key points to you as Calibre have not really cut any corners here.

Brakes SRAM Level T Hydraulic

This is the higher end of the SRAM level brake range. These hydraulic brakes come with 180mm front and 160mm rear rotors. In testing these brakes have performed very well and will have no problem being reliable stoppers for a bike of this level.

CAlibre have gone for the very impressive SX Eagle drive train throughout the bike which consists of the SRAM SX CalibreEagle Power Spline Crank with a 32 tooth cog, The 11-50T SRAM SX Eagle PG1210 Cassette which offers an excellent wide ratio of gearing for getting up those step hills and of course the reliable tried and tested SRAM SX Eagle rear Derailleur. Of course this is all set up in the popular 1 x 12 configuration to limit the need for gear change and to provide less chance of chain drop.

ForkRock Shox

The Rock Shox Recon is an excellent choice of Mid Range Fork. In testing these forks have been able to take a real beating and still provide safe and even distribution and rebound. 130mm of Travel is a decent amount of travel for an XC Full Suspension Bike.

Rear Suspension

Again Calibre have gone for the Rock Shox Monarch Rear Shock which again is a very reliable and well tested shock with a good pedigree.

Calibre have done a nice mix of formula Bolt through Hubs and WTB tubeless ready rims. This is a nice strong mid level Wheelset that will not let you down. The Addition of the WTB Tyres offers great grip and reliability to the Mix. I like the Way that Calibre have put some thought in to this and gone for front and rear specific tyres in different widths. The Thicker WTB Vigilante High Grip Comp 2.3″ on the front will offer extra control on the trails and the Trail Boss on the rear will off great grip and traction through the mud.

Saving Money

Obviously to deliver a package of this quality on a budget is relatively hard if you wish to stay profitable so Calibre have cut costs in places where you really can. The Seatpost, handlebar, Stem, Saddle an of course frame are all Calibre In house products. This is not actually a bad thing as the quality of these components are still high. The frame is a 6061 Hydroformed alloy frame, with a tapered headtube, and forged rocker link, 130mm travel, and a12 x 142mm bolt through rear end. The Calibre stem is a nice short 45mm stem with 780mm bars with a 30mm rise, this is excellent for helping you get the front wheel off the ground while maintain great control in the rough.

In Conclusion

Described by the press as “A hugely important mountain bike” the original Bossnut changed the game and made it possible for anyone to own a properly capable mountain bike for a grand.

The Bossnut is a gateway to proper full suspension riding for many people. Since it’s launch Calibre have been overwhelmed with the positive response to the bike and most importantly from people who are either new to mountain biking or have been able to get back into the sport and not be held back by their bike. The new model builds on everything they have learned at Calibre and is by far their best Bossnut yet.

I truly believe that this bike offers brilliant value based upon the Specification and this bike is a great way for you to get in to full suspension mountain bikes. For the average recreational rider this bike will be all you ever need. On top of this all the components are modular parts which are available from leading manufacturers which means, that you can fully upgrade this bike as you evolve your riding style.

  1. When I am in the market for a new bike, I think I might have to take a look at this one. While not exactly cheap, you are definitely getting what you pay for and it is nice to know that it is on sale for the time being! That always helps. I really like the look of this bike. In fact, I think it would look just as good riding on the road as it would out on the trails. Thanks for taking the time to write this and highlight a really cool bike!

    • It is a great bike for the money. I agree it is a nice looking machine. Most mountain bikes end up being used on the road anyway.  This bike is more than capable of handling the big trails. The Calibre team took them out to France and hit the mountain trails to test how good they are.
